IC: Lindbergh/Noir 2L16B "repro" panels

Post by cools » January 15th, 2020, 4:08 pm

As mentioned in viewtopic.php?f=31&t=40664 I've been working on the design of some Lindbergh control panels.

Image

I'll be getting a small run of them made up - unless there's clear instant demand for more than I'm planning in which case I'll increase the numbers. This is a one off, I'll release all the design files once everything has been sold and I won't be repeating anything.

Panels will be 1.5mm stainless steel. Overlay will be black on silver with everything pre-cut, being handled by @muddymusic. I'm going with studs (like Vewlix and Noir panels) rather than carriage bolts for fitting (so the top of the panel is completely flat), and joystick mounts will be per @FrancoB design viewtopic.php?t=18444&start=60. Panels will be suitable for a Noir as well as a Lindbergh, but I'm not doing a Noir style overlay.

Aim is for something looking very close to what an original Sega 2L16B might have looked like, same dimensions and details (even down to the dot size in the halftone dithering and number of hexagons in the background). Many thanks to @nem, @popinadam, @muddymusic, @FrancoB and @Paulie for everything they've helped with.

Only bit left to source is packaging.

The panels will be £32 and are in production. Overlays priced separately, muddy is evaluating at the moment. Shipping at cost, happy to send anywhere in the world but bear in mind due to length these may cost quite a chunk.

Not taking deposits. Please stick your name down here if interested.

I cant give an exact figure at this point as it depends on numbers, I'm hoping to have the prototype panel done this week and if all is well I'll place the order for however many are wanted early next week.

Overlays will be a separate order and while I don't want to put words into muddymusics mouth, you can visit his site https://www.arcadeartshop.com and get an idea. It's been a real pig of a piece of art to do properly.

Anyone is welcome to take just a panel minus the overlay if they want, too.

Sorry I can't give anything more accurate yet. The metalwork is the part that needs minimum order quantities and value

Should also state no-one is under obligation to buy, I just want numbers so no-one who asks can be disappointed.

Picking up prototype tomorrow, all going well I'll place the order for the panels to be manufactured next week.

Mounting studs for the joysticks have increased to take into account the ~7mm spacers you'll need to use to achieve the correct joystick height.

I only made three measurement errors :awe:

Whilst double checking against an original again, it's not powdercoated - it's painted, pretty thinly, so I won't be powdercoating them. What I'm tempted to do is have them made in stainless rather than mild steel, so they won't necessarily need further finishing unless you really want the black edge. Since the panel is going to be black+metallic anyway, and cab is black+chrome...

Made a couple more tweaks to the art. Only thing left to do there is find the correct font for the 1PLAY 2PLAY text, it's off by a touch.

Looking good cools.

I would definitely get them made from stainless if you can. Saves coating them and you never need to worry about them rusting.

Who are you getting to fabricate them? I sent quotes out to a few places and found www.garcross.co.uk to be the most competitive. They did the Dino panels for me and I was really happy with their service.

I found a place local to me. Seem very competitive, and I can collect.

If @FrancoB says stainless, stainless it'll be. Question: the corner studs have to be very close to the sides, which makes the panel stretch outwards ever so slightly. Stainless help avoid the stretch or i should just abandon the stud idea for this?
