Blast City PSU making a buzzing sound

Post by footmeetsskull » November 18th, 2012, 7:42 pm

Played my Blast City for about a half hour today and I started to notice a buzzing sound. I located the source and it is coming from the PSU not the speakers. I turned it off and then back on and the buzzing starts after playing a game for about 10 minutes. Do I need a new PSU or should I clean it. I shot a quick video of the noise and all the wiring seems to be plugged in. I unplugged the cab just to be safe. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've only had the cab for about a year or so and am hoping this is an easy fix. Vid can be found on my YouTube YouTube.com/footmeetsskull1. I'd post it directly in the thread but am away from my computer and posting from my phone.

Probably either a squealing cap or a resonating transformer.

How do I fix that? Caps as in the caps for the monitor chassis?

You'll need to open it and try to narrow down where the squeal is coming from. Squealing caps need replaced, transformers can be silenced with a cable tie.

Just found the video, don't think that sounds like a cap. Check you don't have anything loose in there that's vibrating. Use a wooden spoon to prod around when it's on.

On second thought I think it may be coming from the monitor going to open the rear service door and see. Is it possible the yoke is starting to vibrate? I've heard that is a common problem. It's just weird as I haven't moved the cab at all and all of a sudden I have this noise. It's not super loud barely noticeable during gameplay. Just want to make sure this baby isn't going to die on me.

Sorry for the double post. It's definitely coming from the monitor.

I have the same with my Blast City. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. I have noticed that it will go away sometimes when the picture/scene changes on the monitor. I used to have a dedicated Virtua Fighter 2 machine that did the same, but nothing ever happened in the 2 years that we owned it. Should I be worried?

Sounds like something vibrating or hitting a fan almost.
