Sorry if it was against the rules
i have now found out that i just need to order a new chip and get it reprogrammed, i will then get someone to solder a chip holder onto the board and then i can just swap the chip over and the cf card when i want to swap games. or maybe there may be a multi chip holder with some kind of switch that can change between different chips, if you see what i mean

anyway...all good fun:)

Where are the rules, as in, anywhere we can read them?
If discussing the technical aspects of game conversion and "bootlegs" old enough to be in MAME is NOT ok, but selling them in the market forum is, then something is f**ed up.

So, selling a progear boot is OK - discussing how to do it is not?
MAME is also a method of playing games you don't own.

In my view, if there is no victim - there is no crime - and in the case of modifying/converting hardware you own, there are none and certainly does not fall under piracy - given that the game is old enough to be in MAME.

Don't really want to get into the whole bootleg thing again. It's been discussed to death :) In summary:

Original hardware > bootlegs/conversions/MAME.

The rules are there because we don't want to encourage the production of bootlegs/conversions. Once they're made they're going to be bought and sold anyway, so it might as well be allowed so long as it's clear what they are.

Everyone's welcome to do what they want with their own kit, but buying up CPS2 stuff and converting it to more valuable boards which are then sold on solely for profit is not something that is tolerated here.

Ok sorry if you feel hard done by ,As you should know boots are allowed to be sold (under sufferance )

But people have to be told there booths .

Now this problem of the viper ,To me it seemed he wanted info for making booth flash cards and been able to run all games on his one board (Am i right) if so thats against the rules as i see them (correct me if im wrong ) so i moved it to the mods Discussion area for clarification of witch im still waiting :?

Now you should know the boss here operates ZERO Tolerance on booths and Porn so now you have been told if you did not know

Kind regards poolchamp

No hard feelings, not even my thread originally - but I want to get it more in the open, as "everybody" is doing it, but the knowledge of a lot of things are kept in private - possibly for profit, which I'm against.

Is it one thing I hate, then it's "info-hoarding" - and in the viper case, I REALLY don't see any issues in converting the hardware from one game to another (or being able to play multiple games on it, ala xxx-in-1 boards/carts).

I think it's better that people have the knowledge to do this stuff themselves, instead of some 1337 idiot that got the info from someone else, and then selling stuff (and possibly making him feel super-important).

True what you say about knowledge ,

But you have to understand if you show one person how to copy a board on any forums whats to stop any person doing the same and selling them else where or even here .

People are greedy and its human nature so i suggest people MP and email info that is needed ..

The champ speaks the truth. Anyway, if you want to know how to do this stuff, there MUST be a site out there somewhere with it already in place. I'm gonna go back to sleep now. :)

Hats off to you invizim. That is the worst problem imo, is the few that have the knowlege keeping it secret & making money out of it.

Thing is, the Powers that be have decided that it's a no go area & I think that needs to be respected. There are very few rules here & for the sake I think it's a small sacrafice to make

One of the reasons for that rule was that I don't want AO to be that site.

Looking at the thread, its one of those borderline situations. The main reason for the bootlegging rule IS to stop sharing of information on bootlegging new software/hardware, whether console or arcade. Invzim does have a point, victimless bootlegging like this I don't generally mind, but although I passed this one by, poolchamp is also correct that it breaks the rule because its reprogramming, and not a million miles away from the CPS2 Progear crap we hate. This thread wasn't really hurting anybodys business nor was it likely to lead to some dodgy profiteering but the rule has to apply accross the board I guess.

If people want the thread back, thats cool. I don't want to be a tyrant. I tried to keep the rules simple (so people would actually bother to read them) but you can't do that and cover everything.

If the knowledge was truly in the open, there would be no market. All I'm saying is that the double standards are there, they are not becoming, and only serve to protect the profit making bootleggers and info hoarders.

What about unlicensed repro CP's and third party wire looms, xbox 360 pad hacks, MAME PCB's with roms...

Just to be clear, this thread is for me not about the viper at all - but more a vehicle get some points across that I feel should be discussed.

And thats a good thing. It should be the forums decision where we draw the line on these issues. Its a complete minefield!

I have no possible argument against that - problem is that all the cool kids(or bad, depending on your inclination) hang out on this site..

Surely someone else hasn't missed the irony of the forums banner with regards to the topics described in this post :D
