The New Zealand Story versions

Post by davewellington » December 9th, 2010, 12:10 am

Hey All
Just got my TNZS in the mail, very happy :) But I was wondering about the different version of TNZS - TNZS 2 or "Extra" has a different set of levels. Is it possible to perform a rom swap? or is the hardware different?

Cheers :D

MAWS lists five different versions in MAME, with differing hardware, and there may be other undumped versions. You could always play around with the versions in MAME, see which one you want and then figure out if you can convert to it.

There are two hardware revisions and multiple software revisions. IIRC there are actually only three truly different versions, the others are just copyright differences.

My personal favourite is the larger PCB with the addon ROM board, as it adds a ton of new graphics in to various levels - it's also the "final" version. The original Export version is the one most of the ports are made from IIRC.

They are quite significantly different, so in all honesty I'd play the game until you can clear it before looking at swapping it to a different version.

Interesting to know.
So the new graphics are background imagery or sprite animations too?

2 single board versions, 1 addon board one.

Just checked in MAME and there's a 3rd single board version, marked as a prototype. It's another mix of the Japan old version.

The most difficult version is the world single board version (no Japan use only warning screen on boot).

is there any way to tell from the pcb that it is the world version or is it only by booting it?

Bump.

I'm curious about this. I don't have access to mame to try them out at the moment, but online rom lists show:

The NewZealand Story (Japan) tnzsj
The NewZealand Story (Japan) tnzs
The NewZealand Story (World, older) tnzso

Are these the main three types Cools describes, or is mame lacking?

I'm also interested in what some of the specific differences are on an anal level.

Those lists are out of date. Tnzs is world, newer nowadays.

There was a website that detailed a lot of the differences but I don't know how up to date it was, nor if its still going. Tbh I very much doubt anyone would want to take the time to detail every single difference as there are so many, it'd be a mammoth project.

My choice still stands though, the twin board is the nicest, albeit the old export version is good if you're familiar with any of the home ports.

I wouldn't get hung up on it though, they all play equally nicely.

Well, just curious to see a difference really. Kind of hard to search for variant screenshots, and my google efforts have resulted in thousands of pages comparing home ports.

Okay, well the level set is about 30% different between the three, and they all have the levels that they share in different orders.

Essentially, learn one game and you won't know either of the other two. Even a lot of the warp doors are in different places.

Most basic difference is on our wikipage, the first screen of the game

Played a credit this morning. Realised something. Touching enemies doesn't kill you in this game. Weapons and hazards do. I'm struggling to think of games with the same mechanic.
