Yeah we've had Shock Troopers recommended. I was waiting to see if we got any votes for the sequel. Having played the first one I assumed the second would be more of the same but I've just watched a video and it looks like a bag of ****.
Shock Troopers goes on the list.

Can't recommend Pulstar enough. Wonderful graphics (a lot of it hand-pixelled), extremely immersive music, fantastic gameplay, brutal bosses, the best R-Type game IMHO. (Also, doesn't have that incredibly annoying, immersion-breaking announcer of Blazing Star. This is what it sounds like:
"BONUS!"
"BONUS!"
"HEY!"
"WEW!"
"BONUS!!!!"
**** that game.

Thanks my friend. Pulstar added to the list and added a few others to give me my list of ten games. I think it's quite a balanced list. Thanks all for your input.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑January 30th, 2021, 11:20 pmCan't recommend Pulstar enough. My efforts are tenuous in "neogeo series" at best though too...

I could make a very weak argument for it... very weak.
Turns out there was a PS2 sequel to TSS, so yes

Metal Slug is the perfect level of difficulty, dope soundtrack and has awesome reply value, especially for score.
Also the difficulty level is gradual getting harder as you get further as opposed to Metal Slug 3 where it starts to get nuts after the second stage.
Think Street Fighter 2X Grandmaster Challenge vs Super Street Fighter Turbo US difficulty.
Ya'll know the slogan.

But no MVS collection is complete without a full set of Metal Slug
Metal Slug, 2 (Maybe), X and 3 is enough, those are the authentic SNK games, SNK Playmore sucks.
Ya'll know the slogan.

But yeah, I have 4 and 5 to complete the set. Both decent though!
I was just having this conversation the other day, oddly. I have a NeoSD Pro, but I had to physically have the games I personally consider the essentials... MS1-5 and X, Neo Turf Masters and arriving tomorrow, Mark of the Wolves.
It’s great to have the SD, but if I had to fork out for OG carts of every game I wanted to play, they’d be (and are) the first I’d buy.

Metal slug - this not only ensured neo geos legacy but also became its crowning glory. It wasn't a big release for aes because idiots didn't know what they had, it's success was proven and nurtured in the arcades it validated the neo geo and top tier 2d game appeal right at the time the industry needed it. I like x, I think 3 is a mess thematically. Despite any virtues of the subsequent games they would be forever chasing the original's charm and quintessential brilliance.
Garou - the most accessible and best designed fighter on the system... Although you might have this nagging idea that this isn't really a fatal fury game and you'd be best off with your favourite real bout as well as garou.
Kof 98. Default answer. Can't argue against it. But if you don't have nostalgia for another (95/97), or favoured playing (2002)... Why Kof at all?
Samsho 2. Can't fight nostalgia. Unless you caught nostalgia at a different point over the decade this series occupied.
Last Blade?... Christ talk about Sophie's choice. Probably the most underrated and forgotten series in fighting game history. Unique and brilliant. Both have something to offer... If you want to master it then 1 would probably be the answer, if you want to introduce friends to it then 2.
World heroes 2 jet - most people will say perfect, and they're not wrong... I just think jet is more world heroes.
Art of fighting 3 - I never play it though... So art of fighting 2 because it's more snk and significant.
Blazing star, I like it better. Its more impressive. Play both, see what you like most, and don't seek opinions because most will disagree if you don't prefer pulstar.
Shock troopers 1... Sometimes everyone just agrees.
Sengoku 3 I don't really care, but it's academically interesting. I'd still take burning fight over this for some stupid reason.
Crossed Swords 2 if you do conversions otherwise it's not a series. Nostalgia again claws at me, but objectively it's 2.
King of monsters 1 because fck 2... And honestly if you can play 2 you might prefer it but all I can remember is it can Fck off.

Re: Neo Geo best in series. There can be only one.
Picked up my first cart on the list Metal Slug , managed to grab it on eBay for a decent price. Now I know I shouldn't expect game prices to be the same as when I was buying them first time round but im struggling to find things at sensible prices where should I be looking.
Last time round I picked up most stuff from Neo Geo forums, a couple of UK and European based sellers on there but what little is for sale now is US based.
Loose carts in decent but not mint condition is what I was after.
Thanks again.
