Have you ever thought of quitting your job and…

Post by John James Pacinelli »

Open an arcade? I think about it every single day. Too bad I have no tech skills.

My boss told me if I have a business idea he could be putting the money… however if I mentioned arcade cabinets to him I would probably get and head-butt... :D

No, there is an arcade about 3mins walk from my house - it's been there for 20+ years. I spent my childhood in there, but now it is full of fruit machines.

Last time I went in he had some crap sitdown racing game, point blank and one proper cab. :|

Unless it's run by some giant chain (or has an incredibly loyal customer base), arcades are dead in the uk.

And that's exactly why somebody should stop thinking and actually open an independent arcade Image I do believe they'll have a come back

I've thought about it a few times, but I just don't see how it could make money, unless it was filled with fruit machines/AWPs.

the only way to keep an arcade going these days is to basically have a family entertainment centre, normally based around a small bowling alley with a bar.
80% of the machines would need to be sports/redemption,nice teddies/toys for the kids
i would then have 4 or 5 nice big dedicated pieces-a couple of drivers(mario kart,outrun2 etc),a couple of shooters(time crisis 4 and hodt4) maybe something like lets go jungle/ddr
then have 6 nice cabs with proper shooters and fighters-some nice tri synced naomis :awe:

this is the way we are going with our place

I doubt they'll make a comeback - the arcade industry killed itself.

Home consoles got closer and closer to "Arcade Perfect", so arcades tried to do something different. That something different is monster sized cabinets - sit-down, rideon, skiing etc. Things that where just too big for most arcades to have more than one or two of. There was also the cost of the machines - they cost far more than a jamma PCB, meaning the op had to charge 50p-£1 per game instead of the traditional 10/20p (with the odd 30p game).

People didn't want to pay it (or play the spunk that was most games released from 96 onwards), they weren't much interested in the old games the op still had, which they had played to death.

Operators then either closed or replaced with fruit machines. :/ (or as one local one did he moved the tanning studio that was upstairs into the basement where the arcade had been, and stuck a load of fruits upstairs).

If you build it they will come! Image

on a serious note I feel if that if you have the connections you could make it work. If it was in a half decent location and you geared it towards the hardcore and ran comps and stuff you could do ok. its no easy task

It all depends on WHERE you open it. Here in Singapore there is plenty of arcades... and these people do LOVE retro shait. Astros, Blast Cities, vs Cities, all the KOFs and SF... they are crazy for that.

Consider the contradiction: a building from the early 90's is considered old here in Singapore. Still, they play SFCE on a NewAstro. The don't give a fudge about 16:9 LCD WAiVilixxx shait. And me neither actually Image

Also I have noticed that -at least in the US- some independent arcades are opening at the moment . They basically live on otaku nerds.

Music from the 80's had a come back. Arcade from the 90's will have a come back too. It's just a matter of time, and it's already happening.

I don't understand that. Could you please comment that?

I think he means some poeple live in bigger more densley populated cities than others. So if you have a higher and denser population in the place you choose to put your arcade you have more potential coustomers than say Hull or Chester. but ovibousley on a world wide scale.

Next gen consoles seem to have killed the market for arcades in the UK, all my local ones have either gone bust or are full of fruit/bingo/roulette machines and the odd high profile gun game.

I would love to have an arcade full of old and new machines close by, but unfortunately there doesnt seem that there is any money in it now.
