Recommend me a Mame set-up...please?

Post by chubsta » October 9th, 2008, 7:04 pm

Im just about to start building a system to go in my shiny new Astro - seriously, that baby is lovely!! :D

I am looking for a set of pc components that will allow me to play stuff up to the 3d gauntlet games, and the latest shooters that mame supports - im not interested in 3d fighters/DDR games/gun games etc.

I know i need the very fastest processor etc that i can get, but at the same time i dont want to be paying for power that is not going to be used. If anyone has got a mame system that they think fits the bill can you let me know the spec please - i intend to run it using TinyXP or similar, via Soft15khz...

Cheers for any advice you can offer....

So Gauntlet Legends must run....correct...

Im sure a few people will chime in before i do tonight m8 but i've got a core 2 duo sff dell with an ati 256 Graphics card with 2gb fast ram.
I'll check how gauntlet legends runs tonight when i get in.

Incidentally the pc cost me around £300

Good luck matey!! ;)
For gods sake, its a carton box - not the holy grail!

Yeah, GL is a game i pretty much HAVE to play - I should be able to get a pretty decent set-up quite cheap because im just going to buy the components so i dont end up with stuff i dont need, but im trying to work out if i really need a quad-core chip, or can i get away with a C2, that sort of thing...

cheers

Quad will be overkill for MAME. It still doesn't take much advantage of multiple processors.

Get the fastest, largest cache 64-bit capable processor you can and run MAME 64-bit.

I’d be interested in your findings, but surely Quad Core is total overkill? You’re also going to need Vista 64 bit to take any real advantage too are you not?

You should consider the Phenom chips if you really need a Quad. They come in 3x & 4x and are a fair bit cheaper than Intels 4x

So a cheapy Athlon 64 would do the trick then?

Soooo, how about this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-Athlon-6000-X ... 286.c0.m14"

coupled with, say, 2gb of ram, running TinyXP. what sort of power supply would i need for something like that? 500w? 600w? 300w??

cheers

I’m pretty sure you could get them cheaper from ebuyer (plus free shipping)

Should be fine.

I'm just at the end of a PC build for myself. Really impressed with the Intel Core 2 Duo's and the stock heatsink - incredibly quiet. And a HUGE recommendation for the Enermax Pro82+ PSUs, quietest fan cooled power supply I've used. The whole machine (4 case fans, 5 HDs, 1 CPU fan, 1 PSU fan) makes less noise than a typical 120mm fan running at normal speed.

Erm, isn't TinyXP 32-bit? MAME gets a massive boost running 64-bit. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.p ... c=72776.40"

And as far as the PSU is concerned, a good high efficiency 400W will be fine.

Reading the 64 specs doesn't Gauntlet Legends tend to lockup??

This is a deal breaker for chubsta i think??

My setup can't run gradius4 for ****...haven't seen a system yet that can run that game properly... :?

Im hoping the GL problem is just one of those 'this version of mame is pants' sort of things that they will have fixed by the end of the current beta cycle.
Im really surprised by Gradius4 - cant see why that doesnt run better, especially given some of the huge improvements on other games by using faster processors etc

I can get a C2D 2.4 or a Athlon X2 6000 for pretty much the same cash - what would you recommend?

The X2 will be a tad faster. And puts out a **** more heat.

I'd seriously recommend investing a bit more in the processor if you can. The E8400 is fantastic value for money - it's the latest Intel tech, runs cool + quiet, can hit huge overclocks if you're into that kind of thing, and has big cache and FSB.

Well, have finally bitten the bullet and gone for the following:

C2D 3ghz (the 8400 cools recommended...)
4gb ram
250gb sata hd
The mobo has the right chipset for me to run soft15khz, so hopefully all will be well!

Am planning to run Vista64...

Is the E8400 better than an AMD Phenom X4 9950?
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150466/sh ... ct_reviews"

I've been talking about upgrading my pc for ages & I’m finally going to do it, but I just don’t know if I need a £100+ processor when I can get an AMD 6000+ X2 for £60

ive read up quite a bit and everyone says there will be no improvement using a quad core over a dual core with mame...

I dont know too much about pcs anyway, so not sure about gaming with a quad core... i use a 360 cos then you dont have to worry about compatibility etc :D
