I Think they are just generic shop unit cabs, I've never seen any evidence that they are Nintendo or any make in particular and you are right that they were aimed at kids, I've always liked them for a Woody

Threw some batteries into my gameboy last night and it was as dead as a dodo cant ever remember have any issues with contacts or needed to clean them when i got it another thing to add to the list to look at some weekend

Its a fair point im not even sure i could play mario without pushing the run button.
Good to know and was somewhat along the lines of what i was thinking but havent seen it before either , the test board ran for ages with no issues I, but i wasnt going to hook up a cave pcb etc just in case.
good stuff ,its probably an ebay adapter job and as soon as you mentioned "bakelite" that is exactly the smell it is like ,will check up on all grounds and clean both set of connectors
Havent looked into this either , but have a taito ps that the 12v line seems to be running high, cant remember what i metered it at , ran a "test" board with it and nothing seemed out of whack ,sound section seemed to run just fine and no excessive heat on any chips any ideas. Anyone ever successful...
I think the adapter was pretty clean , must check edge connectors on the board and give them a good clean ,im not sure if i ever used this adapter with the board before ,so might be best pick up a different one as see if i have the same issue
