Edward Randy PALs and repair log

I wanted to update my post because, with the help of Shoestring, we managed to find that the PAL on location N5 from Caveman Ninja and Robocop 2 are finally identical, but also that they are identical to Edward Randy. My board had issues I didn't expect... I will explain here how I managed to fix it...

Dead Contra

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to diagnose a dead Contra PCB that does this screen on boot with no sound: http://www.marchandmeffre.com/contra-problem.jpg I retraced a suspicious not pulsing signal from a couple of TTLs (which seem ok) to a Fujitsu MB8464A RAM. Pins #7, 8 and 9 on this RAM are not pulsing ...

Edward Randy PAL and repair log

Hi guys, I got an Edward Randy with no video and found a PAL with no signals on all of its outputs (the one located at N5). As PALs from this game are not available yet on the JAMMArcade PAL archive, I was wondering if anybody would have these ones or may be able to dump them. I've checked with the ...

Re: Dead Flying Shark

I tested the signals on every 74LS04 but found nothing suspicious. They're doing their job as inverters.

Re: Dead Flying Shark

I checked the board but couldn't find any Fujitsu TTLs on mine. The 74LS04 I found are TI.

Re: Dead Flying Shark

Thanks guys.
The 470uF cap near the 5V is C1. I changed it and now get a high state on the reset pin of the CPU, but still a black screen without sound. :(

Re: Dead Flying Shark

68000 reset pin goes to a series of TTL chips. Some are simple gates easy to diagnose, some are more complicated (at least for me)...
I will take time later to carefully check and retrace the whole circuit and will let you updated.

Re: Dead Flying Shark

Thank you very much Caius for your explanation. I better understand. A little correction: the 68000 reset pin doesn't goes to a MS4728 but to a NK1038. Pin 1 is connected to VCC and all the other pins give 10 kOhm which seems correct (10 Ohm + 3 zero's). As pin 1 is connected to VCC, should it norma...

Dead Flying Shark

Hello guys, I've recently got a dead Flying Shark original PCB. No picture, no sound... Checking the 68000 pins with a scope reveals no big activity. I've checked the reset pin on the 68000 and it is stuck low (not 0V but approximately 0,3V). I've read that it may be caused by a bad cap but can't re...

Re: Saint Dragon bootleg music issue

Indeed the original board is using one YM2151 (@ 3.5 Mhz) and two OKI6295. I've changed a quartz that were at 7.2 Mhz to 3.7 Mhz and it fixed the music speed ! After comparing with the original game, I discovered that some of the sound FX are missing : interesting fact is that the bootleg only has o...

Indeed, these tantalum capacitors seems the perfect long term solution for these hybrids.

Re: Xexex sound problem

I've received the socket and fit the hybrid chip back. The sound is louder, almost perfectly sounding and not fading out anymore even after one hour of playing. But, the right speaker is still slightly softer than the left one and when I turn the volume high I can still barely hear a random breathe ...

Re: Xexex sound problem

Caius, glad you posted your Bucky O'Hare repair log here as I stumbled upon last week and wanted to post it here as I found it really interesting. I've managed to remove the hybrid chip (was a nightmare like System11 said), replaced the 4558 op-amp and am now waiting to receive the socket to fit it....

Re: Upgrading a Capcom Mini-Cute to stereo sound.

I've upgraded my Cute to Stereo as well. I bought a Lepai TA2020 amplifier, moved the volume potentiometer in place of the original mono one on the inner door, kept my Cute's original speakers as they were in good shape. Even games in monoral have now sound with more amplitude and loudness. I was lo...
